You might think I am trying to paint French countryside like Monet but this scenery is based on the photo of the undevelop part of University Washington campus that I took last summer.

Caves of Torrey Pines

Even though I am not a golfer, it was exciting to see the US Open on Monday, June 16. How can an artist show the excitement of the game? Start playing golf? No, not really.

I happened to visit Torrey Pines in 2007 and I have many photographs from the beach near the golf course. So I decided to paint from one of them. The beach has an interesting structure with bushes and shrubs I do not see here in the Northwest. This location is a little away from the water looking down into the caves.

For some reason, when I painted the white part of the cat a little yellowish, Edouard Vuillard (1868 - 1940) came to my mind. I used to like his painting long time ago. I had more chance to see his paintings in Japan.

Copying the painting I like

My paintings tend to be dark, so I copied the plein air painter, Camille Przewodek's painting in pastel colors. Somewhere I found her painting, then I searched her name and found Henry Hensche and Cape Cod School of Art. According to his teaching, I should be painting color blocks in the level I am in.

Mine - this painting is brighter but there is not enough light in Seattle today to take better photo. I placed a dog instead of the person in the boat.

I usually paint in acrylics but I sometimes paint with AppleWorks to see if colors work in the paintings that I am going to paint. I really liked the colors here, but when I tried with acrylics they didn't transfer very well.

This is my friend's cat again but different from the one below. According to my friend's blog her daughter came back from Australia, and the cat was freightened because he forgot about her. The cat looks like he is hunting but I assume he was just acting cautious in the photo that I painted from. In the original photo, he was on the couch but I placed him in the grassy field.

Restaurant Morimoto

My daughter and I had a chance to eat in Morimoto in Philadelphia twice while we were visiting our relatives. Morimoto is one of the Iron Chefs (from the Japanese TV series aired on Food Network), and his restaurant is as flashy as his personality.

The seats now in purple change gradually to different colors like pink, yellow, and green. Those people in black standing are all employees. Labor intensive, I have to say.

The food, off course, is good. Presentation . . . exciting.

You have to check their Miminalist restroom.

I am calling this 'Munch Cat'. I tried to sell the painting last Halloween but no one wanted it. I am glad it didn't sell because the cat has a special place just outside of our powder room. He looks good and content there.

Rabbits vs. Salmon

I stumbled upon the blog by a French woman saying that she received three freshly killed rabbits from a neighbor. Coincidentally, we received a salmon this morning from a neighbor who caught it at the nearby river. I was thinking rabbits sound so French, then I realized salmon must sound so North West to some people.

This is a quick portrait painting of a girl, but someone said she looks like a pixie so I call her Pixie. I even didn't know what a pixie was until then. She is wearing a knitted sweater/cardigan and a matching cap.
